Lois Teicher has several site-specific installations to her name in Michigan and throughout the country. Her list of public artwork will grow in the coming months, with some work ready to be installed as soon as all the logistical details are figured out, other work in progress and still others in ideation.
And she also has proposals for public art that will never be installed. The artwork is very good, but for various reasons, the proposal was rejected. It also happens that organizations put out calls for proposals with the intention of choosing only one proposal.
For example, in 1999, the City of Detroit weighed several proposals for the Millennium Bell, a sculpture that would be installed in downtown Detroit in time to ring in the year 2000. Matthew Blake and Chris Turner had the winning proposal. But some people think the concept by Richard Bennett is better.
Curator Veronica Bielat was thinking that she would like for the public to at least see this public art that never was by Richard Bennett, Lois Teicher and other sculptors. So she curated an exhibit of the small scale models at Detroit Artists Market.
The exhibit opened August 28 and is slated to run to September 26. The curator will moderate a gallery talk with three of the artists on September 10 at 6:00 p.m. Vince Carducci will moderate a panel discussion with Mikel Bresee and Craig Wilkins at 1:00 p.m. on September 19. I expect both of those to be very informative, and I intend to update this article after those events.
