Anyone who uses a lens to focus light onto a light-recording medium, be it film or sensor, is a photographer. And photography is art. But this definition is overly broad. So, to be considered a photographer for the purposes of this website, the artist must produce photos for the purpose of exhibiting them in a physical art gallery.

Painters who take photographs for use as reference images for paintings, and don't exhibit those reference photographs in formal exhibits, don't count as photographers for the purposes of this website.
